Depressed? Find 6 Effective Ways to Cope.

Depression is described as a condition of mental disturbance, typically characterized by difficulty in maintaining concentration or interest in life, affecting our day to day performance. We all go through a depressive state at one point or the other, either due to a difficult experience or a combination of experiences that built-up over time. Getting into depression takes no time (thanks to our lifestyle), but coming out of it can take a lifetime and sometimes even life is short for it. Dark shadow of this silent killer could start creeping into our life from a very early age of life, even before adolescence. With time its grips are getting stronger and its presence is felt in all aspects of life be it personal, professional or social.

Ohh its serious- World health organization have recognized this illness as the most widespread and root cause of various other chronic illnesses. Depression if gone untreated or not dealt with at an early stage can lead to harmful and serious conditions, even death. Medications are not the solution but a resort in acute cases. Solution is the “will” to take actions to fight against it. But the irony with depression is that it dismantles your will-power, making you helpless. When you experience unwillingness to do anything, remind yourself that only YOU are the solution and are more powerful than any illness or negativity in this life.

Here are a few simple practices or steps which are generally advised and found to be very effective in the long run. So get up and try to adopt these simple steps, few if not all, and choose to live a meaningful and happy life.

Overcome Depression in 6 Effective Ways 

  • Breathe Deep: Take deep breaths, both in and out for about 10 to 15 minutes. You can also try ‘alternative breathing’. Breathing deep can balance your “chi” (pranic energy or life energy), instantaneously opening any thought or energy blockages. Breathing pattern is linked to our thought system, so working on your breathe would automatically work on your brain, where depression lives. Yogic breath practise can bring about drastic improvements.

  • Work-Out:  It is believed that physical activities release natural anti-depressants. So, sweat-it-out. You can start with a brisk walk around the block, or a garden. Gradually work up to a routine that fits with your needs and enjoyment. Try involving friends in your sessions since having a partner will keep you motivated. Yoga is also an excellent way to exercise as it works holistically on ‘mind-body-soul’.

  • Engage in Creative Activities:  Try exploring constructive activities around you, and engage in them. It could be adopting some ‘self-help’ therapy like- listening to soulful music; painting; self-exploration; meditation; hobbies or just plan to volunteer. Such activities are proven to have a therapeutic effect and will help you restore your emotional balance. Try to avoid any destructive tendencies (alcohol, drugs, sex, etc.,) as depression blocks your discriminative power exposing you to greater risks.

  • Express Yourself: Document your feelings in a book or a diary. You need not worry about being judged because we all have lived it or are going to live it. Just feel at ease and express your feelings both positive and negative by any means like , writing, dancing, painting, listening to music or simply shouting. Speak out your problems to family or close friends that you trust. Support from the people whom you love has a great healing impact. But after expressing it all at once, work to get over the negativity and divert your energy to positive expression. Overcome the tendency to live pain again in mind. Try to get over it and do not indulge in it again.

  • Change Your Environment: Change your environment to change your moods. Afterall ‘environment is stronger than will power’. Travelling and exploring new places refreshes your mind and broadens your outlook helping you see the life with new angles. Remember, we do not exist in isolation. So try to be surrounded with positive or happy people. Make your environment more optimistic, curious, positive and gaiety. Do not look for such environment, create it.

  • Develop Faith: Believe. Believe in yourself, in truth, in a guru, in any religion or anything your heart says is right. Develop faith and seek only the truth. And the truth is that there is a higher energy which is the source of your creation and you are connected to it. Work in your connection by deepening your faith. Adopt various spiritual practices. Faith is a powerful coping tool given only to human beings. Use it to cross any difficulty in life. Those who leave it, succumbs to ignorance. You better sail through it.
